iWonder | "True 1:1 Gun Handling and Aiming in FPS Games" by yakuzakazuya

This idea is inspired by the Move game Start The Party (STP). In STP there is one mini game where the Move controller turns into a frog. When you press the Trigger button this frog will lash out its tongue to catch flies. The frog’s position is amazingly tracked 1:1 in 3D space, every subtle movements, rotation and orientation of the Move controller is faithfully recreated in-game.

Now, we could apply this to how you handle guns in FPS games. The frog obviously turns into a handgun.  Simple enough.

Q: What’s so novel about this idea?
A: There hasn’t been a single FPS game where you actually aim guns like you do in real life. You are actually controlling the on-screen crosshair, not the gun itself.

IMPLEMENTATION
The Move controller becomes a handgun in-game with 1:1 tracking. Instead of having an imaginary on-screen crosshair, the gun will have a laser attachment for rapid target acquisition. You actually have to point/aim yout Move/handgun at targets. It’s like aming a real firearm with the red dot of the laser as your targeting apparatus.

MOVEMENT
You use a Dualshock or Nav con to control character movement and the camera.

Control scheme A:
The left analog stick controls the camera. Push the analog up/down to look up/down. Push the analog left/right to turn left/right.
R2 is to move forward. R2 is analog so you have control of speed variation in moving forward.
R1 is to move backward.
Press and hold down L3 + Left/Right to strafe left/right.

Control scheme B:
Push the analog up/down to move forward/backward. Push the analog left/right to turn left/right.
R1 is to look up, R2 is to look down.
Press and hold down L3 + Left/Right to strafe left/right.

BENEFITS
Immersiveness. You can manipulate the gun as you like. You can look at it up close at any angle, so close you can read the markings on the gun. You can shoot it sideways gangster style. You can melee using the butt of the handgrip, etc.
It’s a simple idea, I hope to see it implemented soon in a Sony 1st party game.

Thanks for reading!
